thought I saw your face today, in the sparkle of the morning sun.
And then I heard the angel say, "Their work on earth is done."

I thought I heard your voice today, then laugh your hearty laugh.
And then I heard the angel say, "There's peace dear one at last."

I thought I felt your touch today, in the breeze that rustled by.
And then I heard the angel say, "The spirit never dies."

I thought I saw my broken heart, in the crescent of the moon.
And then I heard the angel say, "The Lord is coming soon."

I thought that you had left me, for the stars so far above.
And then I heard the angel say, "They left you with their love."

I thought that I would miss you so, and never find my way.
And then I heard the angel say, "They're with you every day."

The sun, the wind, the moon, the stars, will forever be around,
Reminding you of the love you shared, and the peace they've finally found.

I wish you hope and peace on your journey

The Dream

I was standing by your bed last night, I came to have a peep, I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.

I whispered to you softly, as you wiped away a tear, Im here, I havent left you, Im fine, look here, it's me

I was close to you at breakfast, as you poured your cup of tea, thinking of all those times, your hands reached out to me.

I came with you to the shop today, your arms were getting sore, I wanted to carry the bags for you, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care, I wish that I could tell you, that I'm no longer lying there.

I walked towards the house with you as you reached to find your keys, I gently put my hand on you, I smiled and said its me

You looked so very tired, as you sank back in the chair; I tried so very hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

Its possible for me to be so near you every day, to say to you with certainty, I never went away.

You sat there very quietly, and then I saw you smile; I think you knew, in the stillness, I was close to you.

The night has come, I smile and watch you yawning and say Good Night, God Bless, Ill see you in the morning.

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide, Ill rush across to greet you. Be standing by your side.

I have so much to show you, so many things to see, be patient, live your journey, and then come home to be with me.

Can you see the change in me?
It may not be so obvious to you…
I may participate in family activities.
I may attend family reunions.
I help plan holiday meals.
You tell me you’re glad to see that I don’t cry anymore.
But I do cry!!!
When everyone is gone ~
...When it’s safe ~
The tears fall.
I cry in private so my family won’t worry…
I cry until I’m exhausted and can finally fall asleep.
You tell me you admire my strength and positive attitude.
But I am not strong!!!!
I feel that I have lost control,
And panic when I think about
Tomorrow, next week, next year.
I go about the routine of the job.
I complete assigned tasks.
I drink coffee and smile.
You tell me you’re glad to see I’m “over”
The death of a loved one.
But I’m not “over it”.
If I got over it, I would be the same as before
My loved one died.
I will NEVER be the same!!!!!!!
At times I think I am beginning to heal,
But the pain of losing someone
I loved so much has left a
Permanent scar on my heart…
I visit my neighbors;
You tell me you’re glad to see I’m holding up so well…
But I’m not holding up well!!!!!
Sometimes I want to lock the door and hide from the world.
I spend time with friends, I appear calm and collected
I smile when appropriate.
You tell me it’s good to see me back to my “old self”
But I will NEVER be back to my old self.
Death and grief have touched my life
And I am…
Forever Changed!!!!

Remember me, when I have gone away;
Gone far away, into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go, yet turn and stay.

Remember me, when no more day by day
You can tell me of our future
That you have planned.
Only remember me
Then you will understand
That it is too late to cancel or pray.

Yet, if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember,
Do not grieve, for if the darkness and corruption
Leave a vestige of the thoughts that I once had,
Better by far, you should forget and smile
Than to remember and be sad.

Hazel, I'm so glad you've posted these lovely poems.

The Rosetti especially, I've always loved that one. And The Dream had me in tears.

sending my love to you xxx

when I'm Gone
by Mrs. Lyman Hancock

When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
And remember only the smile

Forget unkind words I have spoken
Remember some good I have done
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun

Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day

Then forget to grieve for my going
I would not have you sad for a day
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay

And come in the shade of evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
And remember only my best

the loss of our beloved pets causes immense sadness we never forget them i hope those of you grieving for your best friend because that's what our pets are will find comfort knowing they are happy free from illness old age and pain with their new friends at rainbow bridge

The Rainbow Bridge

inspired by a Norse legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.
For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.
No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.
They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.
For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.
The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

(S Hartwell)

She lies there gently breathing,
And she'd like for you to know,
That she's reached the final crisis
And it's time for her to go.

She needs a little help now,
To ease her from this life,
There's nothing left but suffering,
You can see it in her eyes.

The vet has got the answer,
To end her pain and fear,
That last act of compassion,
For a friend you love so dear.

So save her from those last days,
She deserves a final peace,
It's a mercy, not betrayal,
To ease her into sleep.

I know your heart is broken,
Though the pain, in time, will ease,
And at Heaven's gates she's waiting,
On the threshold of a dream.

If it should be I grow frail and weak
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep.
Then you must do what must be done
When this last battle can't be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
Selfishness might stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.
We've had so many happy years
That what's to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer. So,
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me where my needs they'll tend.
Only stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know, in time, you, too, will see
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.
Do not grieve it should be you.
Who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years......
Don't let your heart hold any tears

To Those I Love

If I should ever leave you
To go along the silent way, grieve not,
Nor speak of me with tears, but laugh and talk
Of me as if I were beside you there.
(I'd come - I'd come, could I but find a way!
But would not tears and grief be barriers?)
And when you hear a song or see a bird
I loved, please do not let the thought of me
Be sad .. For I am loving you just as I always have .
You were so good to me!
There are so many things I wanted still
To do - so many things to say to you .
Remember that I did not fear . it was
Just leaving you that was so hard to face .
We cannot see beyond . But this I know:
I loved you so - `twas heaven here with you!

I thought of you by Sara Teasdale

I thought of you and how you love this beauty,
And walking up the long beach all alone
I heard the waves breaking in measured thunder
As you and I once heard their monotone.

Around me were the echoing dunes, beyond me
The cold and sparkling silver of the sea
We two will pass through death and ages lengthen
Before you hear that sound again with me.
