You don't need to wear black any more, but keep it on the conservative side. Consider the others in attendance and not just the deceased. You might have been "blue jean buddies" with him, but his grieving mother will not see it this way. The obituary will give you clues about what the "mood" will be --- if its at a funeral home, go conservative. If its an irish wake at your old hang-out, well.... you get the idea.
