Copy of Australian birth certificate?

My dad was born in Australia in 1935, even though he lived in the UK for most of his life. I would like to start tracing our family tree - does anyone know where I could get a copy of his birth certificate? And how far back do Australian birth and death records go?

I think the earliest that death records go back to in Australia is 1788, but it seems to depend on the state in question. Good luck!
